Transport management and transport procurement for businesses

Posti is one of the Nordic region’s largest transport buyers. We provide transport management for businesses that want to outsource all or part of their transport function. Our combined transport volumes give us a strong negotiating position and allow us to optimise your flow based on price, lead time and quality.

An external transport department for your business

Posti can take over the tasks that would otherwise be handled by an in-house transport department. This gives you one coordinated function for the day-to-day management and administration of your transports:

  • Procurement: we procure carriers for your flows and manage the transport agreements over time

  • One contact, one agreement and one invoice: you consolidate your transports with us, even when several carriers are used in your flows

  • Booking and documentation: we book shipments with a suitable carrier and handle the required transport documentation

  • Optimisation: we continuously optimise transports by identifying which shipments can be consolidated, the service levels different flows need and where costs can be reduced

  • Deviation management: when something does not go to plan, we contact the carrier, investigate what happened and keep you updated until the issue is resolved

  • Market monitoring: we monitor changes that affect your transports and let you know when destinations, carrier options or customs regulations change

When is transport management the right choice?

Transport management often becomes relevant when transport flows have grown too extensive or complex to manage alongside the rest of the business. You may be using several carriers, shipping to many markets or lacking a clear overview of prices, deviations and delivery quality. As your transport needs grow, transport management is also an efficient alternative to building an in-house transport department.

How transport management differs from buying transport per shipment

When you order freight transport per shipment, you purchase the movement of goods from one point to another under agreed terms. With transport management, you outsource responsibility for managing the transport flow. Posti selects carriers, negotiates terms, plans and books shipments, and follows up costs and results.

The goods are transported in the same way in both cases. Posti uses the same transport solutions as for individual transport orders. The difference is which party plans, coordinates and follows up the transports. If you need help with a single shipment, including documentation and customs clearance, freight forwarding is the right service.

All or part of your transport function

You can outsource your entire transport function, selected parts or individual tasks to Posti. The solution is tailored to what you want to keep in-house and what you want us to manage. We agree on the scope when designing the solution, and it can be adjusted as your needs change.

How transport procurement works

Transport procurement is a central part of transport management and starts with how your shipments operate today. We use that information to define the requirements, compare carriers and develop a solution that can be monitored in operation. The agreements are then managed over time and provide the basis for following up your transports.

Frequently asked questions about transport management

Transport management means that a business outsources its transport work to an external partner that procures carriers, plans transports, books shipments, manages deviations and follows up costs and quality. The day-to-day handling of bookings, transport documents and freight invoices is known as transport administration.

TMS stands for transport management system. It brings bookings, shipments, prices and delivery status together, allowing costs, delivery performance and deviations to be monitored by carrier and flow instead of by individual shipment.

Transport management covers the management of transports. A 4PL partner manages the entire supply chain and coordinates several logistics providers, with transport as one part of the service.

The cost depends on the number of shipments, carriers and flows to be managed, and which parts of the work you outsource. Pricing is tailored to the solution after a review of your current transports.
