Customs Services for businesses

Posti provides digital customs services for businesses that import and export goods. We manage your customs processes, including customs declarations, commodity classification, transit procedures and customs warehousing, regardless of which countries you trade with. We act as your customs representative and provide the expertise of an external customs department, with advice and ongoing support whenever you need it.

What our customs services include

are digitally integrated with the Swedish Customs system, where all Swedish imports and exports are declared, regardless of where the goods come from or where they are going. If you trade with Norway, we also handle declarations on the Norwegian side, directly through the Norwegian customs authority’s system.

We can manage the entire customs process:

  • Customs representation and customs declarations: we prepare and submit your import and export declarations for fast and accurate customs clearance.

  • Digital customs services: we digitise and automate your customs processes, whether you currently work with PDFs and Excel files or want a direct integration with your ERP system.

  • Commodity classification: we make sure your goods are assigned the correct commodity code, also known as an HS code. This ensures that the correct duty rate and customs duties are applied and that all import and export restrictions are followed.

  • Transit procedures: we handle all types of transit procedures within and outside the EU, with full traceability throughout the process.

  • Customs warehousing: we administer your customs warehouses and provide clear monitoring and real-time reporting.

  • Customs audits: we help you prepare for and manage audits by the Swedish Customs Authority, from documentation to direct communication with the authority.

Every flow is different. You can hand over your entire customs operation to us or choose the areas where you need additional support. Contact us, and we will identify which parts of the service can bring the most value to your business.

Customs services without manual steps

Customs work requires precision. One incorrect commodity code or a missing document can be enough to hold goods at the border. That is why we automate the process using our own system and the Edentri customs platform. Your data flows directly from your source documents into the customs authorities’ systems.

You can leave manual Excel files and XML documents behind. There are no additional line-item charges when a declaration contains more commodity codes, and you can follow every case from start to finish. This saves time, reduces costs and cuts down on administration. If you want to manage customs and freight through one partner, we can also take care of your transport services.

Customs expertise for international trade

Posti has provided customs services for ten years. Some of the largest brands in the Nordic region entrust their customs operations to us, and we help their goods reach markets around the world. Every flow is supported by specialists who work with customs regulations, trade agreements and duty rates every day. This means your decisions are based on current knowledge.

“Posti is an important partner for our import and export flows. They are knowledgeable, solution-oriented and flexible, as well as consistently professional and pleasant to work with.” Örjan Terén Head of Supply Chain and Technical Development, Lexington Co.

Frequently asked questions about customs

A customs duty is a charge imposed when goods are brought into a country. In Sweden, the EU’s common customs tariffs apply. The amount of duty is determined by the goods’ commodity code, also known as the HS code, their customs value and their country of origin. You can look up the applicable duty rate in the Swedish Customs Authority’s customs tariff.

When goods are imported, the importer, normally the recipient of the goods, is responsible for paying customs duties and import VAT. We manage customs declarations on behalf of businesses. Where required, we can also handle the payment process so that goods are not held at customs.

Import VAT is the VAT charged when goods are imported from countries outside the EU. VAT-registered businesses do not normally pay import VAT at the border. Instead, they report it to the Swedish Tax Agency as part of their regular VAT return. We make sure the customs value and supporting documentation are correct, helping you report the right amount of VAT.

Goods imported from the United States must be declared when they enter Sweden, just like all imports from countries outside the EU. The applicable duty rate depends on the goods’ commodity code and origin. Import VAT is payable in addition to any customs duties. We handle the customs declaration, commodity classification and communication with the Swedish Customs Authority.

Since Brexit, the United Kingdom has been outside the EU customs union. Goods imported from the UK must therefore be declared to customs. Goods of UK origin are often eligible for a zero rate of customs duty under the trade agreement between the EU and the UK. However, a customs declaration is still required. We help businesses manage both customs declarations and rules of origin.

No. Goods in free circulation within the EU can move freely between Member States without customs duties or customs declarations. Customs procedures are required when trading with countries outside the EU. This includes Norway, even though it is part of the Nordic region.

Norway is outside the EU customs union. Every shipment crossing the border must therefore be declared twice: once when it leaves one country and again when it enters the other. Goods originating in the EU or Norway are often exempt from customs duties under applicable free trade agreements. However, customs declarations are always required. We prepare and submit the declarations in both countries.

A customs convention is an international agreement that simplifies customs procedures between countries. One example is the Common Transit Convention, which allows goods to pass through several countries without being cleared through customs in each country. We manage transit procedures in accordance with the applicable conventions and regulations.

A customs representative prepares and submits customs declarations on behalf of another business. They also manage communication with customs authorities under a power of attorney. Posti acts as a customs representative for businesses that import and export goods. We combine commodity classification, customs declarations and advice in one service.

The price depends on your customs flows, including the number of shipments and declarations, the services you need and the level of integration with your systems. We do not charge additional line-item fees for declarations containing several commodity codes. Tell us about your shipment volumes, and we will prepare a quote tailored to your business.
